Skinnydippers Win Nude Swim Fight

The British Columbia Supreme Court upheld the right of Canadians to skinny-dip at private facilities, including swims held at municipal facilities, reports The Globe and Mail. In a decision November 8, Justice Paul Williamson quashed the Surrey City Council's decision to cancel the use of the Newton Wave Pool to the Surrey Skinnydippers, calling the council's reasons for preventing the private nude swims "patently unreasonable."

Willimas wrote that the council had overstepped its bounds by attempting to "strengthen" the portion of Criminal Code, section 174 that prohibits public nudity by treating a private swim party as if it were a public place. "For those who came of age in the 1960s, skinnydipping would hardly seem to be a threat to the moral fibre of western civilization" Williamson wrote in his decision. The case began in 2003 after a positive article was published in a local newspaper about the Skinnydippers' nude swims. Read more . . .

Vietnam OKs First Nude Exhibit

The Turkish Daily News reports that Vietnamese authorities have given permission for the first ever exhibition of nude photographs in the country. Photographer Thai Phien will exhibit 48 of his nude photos in Hanoi this month. He will also publish a collection of about 70 photographs prior to the exhibit.

The conservative communist country requires that materials be submitted to censors for review. Films, books, photos and other artistic works are often censored. Earlier this year censors in Ho Chi Minh City refused to allow a similar exhibit by a female artist. Read more . . .

Naked Yoga Latest Trend

According to Yoga Journal, the latest trend in the popular mind/body practice, is naked yoga. To longtime yoga practioners, it makes perfect sense. After a recent nude yoga class in San Francisco, several people said being nude helped them feel more comfortable in their bodies, allowing them to peel off another layer of ego: the one attached to the clothing they wear.

Meredith Medland, who leads the class at San Francisco's One Taste, told Yoga Journal that she has had a lifelong battle with her body, once weighing 200 pounds. After surgery, a 12-step weight loss program and participating in Dr. Phil's Ultimate Weight Loss Challenge, she found that teaching naked yoga is what helped her feel most content by helping "people fall in love with themselves through falling in love with their bodies." Nude Students Protest Livable Wages

Student labor activists at the University of Vermont (UVM) marched nude across campus to protest the lack of a livable wage to its employees. Protestors also demanded that the university not stand in the way of a union organizing drive among an additional group of employees that are not represented in collective bargaining.

The protestors handed out slips which read "Why are these people naked? We're marching to remind you that many UVM workers can't afford their Bare Necessities. The naked truth is that 400+ UVM employees don't meet their basic needs." Read more . . .
