AP Story Creates Media Blitz

The big news recently has been media coverage of an Associated Press article featuring AANR and about Solair Recreation League's attempts to attract younger members to its club in Woodstock, Connecticut. The AANR office was contacted by media from all over North America, London, and South Africa who picked up the article.

CNN ran the piece as a lead story. As a result of the media blitz, Steve Vickers of the AANR office was invited to appear on Fox News show the "O'Reilly Factor." He enlightened Bill O'Reilly about the benefits of nude recreation, why he and his college-aged friends enjoy it, and the value of having a variety of age groups present at nudist resorts and clubs. College Funding Threatened Over Nudity

Certain groups in Michigan are threatening to slash state funding of Saginaw Valley State University and other Michigan colleges over a few naked buttocks and brief nudity, reports Detroit News online. The focus of the protest is a student production of "Angels in America," the Pultizer Prize-winning play about the AIDS crisis. Some conservative state representatives plan to push for funding cuts to any public university that shows the play even though they haven't actually seen it. Read more at Angels.

Nimoy's Newest Mission

Leonard Nimoy is best known as Spock in the long-running sci-fi television series "Star Trek." These days, Nimoy has a new passion, reports the New York Times. Nimoy's latest project doesn't involve acting. His forthcoming book, "The Full Body Project," features nude photographs of plus-sized women and explores body image and self-acceptance in Western society.

Nimoy said that when doing research for the project he was struck by the fact that "the average American woman . . . weighs 25 percent more than the models who are showing the clothes they are sold." Even though most women will never achieve that standard, according to Nimoy, this spawns industries that cater to these insecurities, such as plastic surgery, fad diets, cosmetics, and more with the unspoken assumption that if you spend money in these areas you will look like these models. Nimoy says the worst part is that it sends the message to women that "you don't look right." Nimoy hopes to dispel that myth. The women who agreed to pose nude for the book are comfortable in their bodies. Read more at Nimoy.

Nude News Updates

Need to catch up on nude news? The postgazette.com, a service of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has compiled recent news stories involving nudity into one article. Titled "All the nudes that's fit to print," the article covers nudity in Brattleboro, Vermont; the Solair story; nude telecommuting; and the possible dismissal of a high school music teacher for appearing in a production of "The Full Monty." Readers of the article will also be able to discover what a gymnophobe is (no, it doesn't have anything to do with high school PE classes). Read more at Nude news.
