Photographer Raises Body Image Consciousness

Seattle-based photographer Rosanne Olson is on a mission: to teach women to love their bodies. She is compiling photographs of nude adult women and their statements about their bodies for The Body Image Book, which she hopes to publish soon. Olson began the project after a woman commissioned a nude photograph before a double mastectomy so her husband could remember her body the way it was.

Olson said, in the April issue of More magazine, that people don't appreciate themselves as they are and she "wanted them to know how beautiful they are at any given moment and to help create compassion for ourselves and others." Read the More magazine article "6 Naked Women Who Love Their Bodies," see the photographs and learn more about the project at Body Image Book.

Tunick Picks New Locale

United States photographer Spencer Tunick, known for his nude photographs taken at various locations around the world, has chosen the pyramids outside Mexico City as his next location. The photo shoot is tentatively scheduled for May 6 as he awaits permission to take photographs at the pyramids. The project has been three years in the making, and 3700 participants have registered so far. Tunick hopes to have 4000 volunteers by the time he is ready to begin the shoot. Read more at Tunick.

Championship Skater Releases Nude Photos To Aid Sport

A champion speedskater has shed her clothes to raise the profile of the sport and gain a sponsor, reports the UK Metro. Nicole Begg feels her speedskating world record and the sport itself suffer from a lack of recognition in her native Australia even though it is popular in the rest of the world. Undaunted by suggestions that the photos might detract from her achievements, Begg said that "Lots of sports stars, both male and female, have done this sort of thing."

Painting Creates Controversy at Art Show

A painting of a nude woman as part of a graduate art exhibit has caused a stir at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, reports The Fairfax County Times. The oil painting by graduate student Jessica Clements depicts a breech birth showing only the legs of the baby during its birth. The painting created enough controversy that a school official asked to meet with the artist. According to the university's press secretary, the painting will remain on dsplay. "We have no intention of removing the painting," said Daniel Walsch."The university is not in the censorship business." Read more at Nude Painting.
