Freedom Seeker Remembered The family and friends of Luis Andrew Martinez, also known as "The Naked Guy," are inviting the public to celebrate the short life of the freedom seeker who devoted his life to challenging the status quo, reports The Mercury News. Although he died at age 33 of suicide, he became intrigued with nudity and the laws surrounding nudity while a student at the University of California Berkeley in the early 1990s. His nickname stemmed from being frequently seen walking the Berkeley campus wearing only shoes and a backpack. To Martinez, clothes were a symbol of elitism and repression. He organized a nude-in on campus and appeared on CNN, "Hard Copy", and many other national television programs.Unfortunately, his celebrity came with a price: due to laws banning public nudity, Martinez was expelled and arrested. "He felt that people should be free to be who they are," says the Reverend Dollins, a United Methodist Church minister who lived in the same dorm as Martinez. "He talked about how these were Victorian, antiquated principles that kept us repressed."
