Ilsley Rings in the New Year at DeAnza Springs Ilsley will welcome the new year at DeAnza Springs Resort, site of the AANR 75th Anniversary Convention, August 6-13, 2006. The resort, located in Jacumba, California, is comprised of 523 acres, surrounded by 700,000 nudist-friendly acres of the Anza-Borrega State Park. The grounds include grassy lawns, shade trees, and sparkling swimming pools, as well as typical desert vegetation. There are miles of nature trails for hiking and mountain biking. Within short hiking distance are vestiges of ancient Native American encampments, abandoned mines, and railroad camps to explore. With all the friendly folks at DeAnza, guests can socialize as much or as little as they choose under the peaceful desert skies. Make plans now to attend AANR's 75th Anniversary Convention at DeAnza Springs Resort for a celebration you won't want to miss! The Ilsley is a traveling trophy commissioned to commemorate AANR's 75th Anniversary as the credible voice of reason for nude recreation in North America. Ilsley is traveling to nearly 40 AANR clubs and resorts across the U.S. and Canada. Throughout his tour, special themed events and celebrations are planned at host clubs along the way. The award is named for the late Rev. Ilsley Boone, the founder and first Executive Director of AANR's predecessor, the American Sunbathing Association. Boone is perhaps best remembered as the flamboyant clergyman who served as plaintiff in the 1958 case of Sunshine and Health v. Summerfield. That case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court and established, once and for all, First Amendment protection for nudist publications. Ilsley ends his tour in August 2006 at the Association's 75th Anniversary Convention at Deanza Springs Resort outside San Diego, California. You can track Ilsley's weekly progress on his year-long tour right here on the AANR website.
Documentary Focuses on Breast Obsession A documentary that aims to demystify society's fascination with the breast has been released from Bullfrog Films. The film, Busting Out, explores the history and politics of breast obsession in America, and its connection with breast cancer, breastfeeding, and body image. Directors Francine Strickwerda and Laurel Spellman Smith unflinchingly examine the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of this American icon. Told from the point of view of Strickwerda who lost her mother to breast cancer when she was a child, Busting Out challenges both women and men to examine their own beliefs and, hopefully in the process, gain a healthier perspective. Happy Holidays, Happy Nude Year Shoebox greeting cards, a division of Hallmark, debuted a holiday card this year that is definitely in sync with the nudist lifestyle. The card depicts a nude man in the snow wearing just a woolen cap, mittens, boots, and muffler, wondering if maybe it is too cold to go sledding after all. Inside, the card wishes the recipient a "warm and happy holiday." To all our nudist friends, we echo Hallmark's sentiments and wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy nude year! Judge Delays Ruling in Fla. Case A Volusia County judge delayed ruling on whether a topless activist disturbed the peace when she bared her breasts during a political protest in July 2005. Liz Book, a 43-year-old stay at home mom, was arrested in Daytona Beach, Florida, on the grounds that she violated the city's anti-nudity ordinance. Book's speech next to four nude Grecian statues that are nude to the waist was part of her ongoing effort to allow women to go topless wherever men can. Book's attorney argued that police acted improperly when they arrested the activist because Book's nudity was protected as part of political speech. In July, a Volusia County judge ruled in Book's favor on a 2004 alleged violation, throwing out the $253 fine, but the city appealed. Book says she is hopeful she will prevail in both cases.
