Ilsley Travels to Northcoast Naturists Ilsley's travels this week took him to Cleveland, Ohio, where he met the Northcoast Naturists. Founded in 1996, the club now has over 200 members who enjoy the variety of activities offered by the club. Summertime fun includes picnics, canoe trips, nude biking in New York's Chautauqua Gorge, a Tennessee nude houseboat excursion, and the famous Volleyball Superbowl at White Thorn Lodge the weekend after Labor Day. During the winter, the club sponsors swims, wine tasting socials, theme parties, and nude bowling. Northcoast Naturists actively welcomes newcomers and has an effective women's outreach group. The Ilsley is a traveling trophy commissioned to commemorate AANR's 75th Anniversary as the credible voice of reason for nude recreation in North America. Ilsley is traveling to nearly 40 AANR clubs and resorts across the U.S. and Canada. Throughout his tour, special themed events and celebrations are planned at host clubs along the way. The award is named for the late Rev. Ilsley Boone, the founder and first Executive Director of AANR's predecessor, the American Sunbathing Association. Boone is perhaps best remembered as the flamboyant clergyman who served as plaintiff in the 1958 case of Sunshine and Health v. Summerfield. That case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court and established, once and for all, First Amendment protection for nudist publications. Ilsley ends his tour in August 2006 at the Association's 75th Anniversary Convention at Deanza Springs Resort outside San Diego, California. You can track Ilsley's weekly progress on his year-long tour right here on the AANR website.
Wreck Beach Update The University of British Columbia (UBC) was given a permit to build the first of four proposed 2-story tower residences for students just across from the cliff edge of Pacific Spirit Regional Park. The first tower, Phase One, is nearing completion. Phase Two of the project, including three more proposed towers, has not yet received permits and is now the issue of controversy. The towers threaten the park's cliff stability, migratory and resident birds, wildlife habitat, eagle roosts, and viewscapes. Heavy truck movements, with over 24 movements per day, send dangerous vibrations to the cliff face and jeopardize the wilderness-like ambience of Wreck Beach. What you can do A UBC town hall hearing is scheduled for October 5. Those who support Wreck Beach are being asked to write a letter to the University of British Columbia and the Greater Vancouver Regional District expressing opposition to the tower construction. The letters should be e-mailed to Judy Williams at judyw@wreckbeach.org by October 4. She plans to print them, bind them, and present them at the October 5 hearing. Information is available at the Wreck Beach website about signing a petition and making donations to the cause.
